In May 2026, routine wastewater surveillance in Cape Town detected two poliovirus strains – likely imported and vaccine-linked, with no paralysis cases. South Africa remains polio-free, having recorded its last wild case in 1989 and regained certified polio-free status after a 2022 regional scare.
