   What did the other 61% say was the reason that they did not attend school?

      Hi Campbell,

      There are a large number of reasons provided, here are some others:

      Unable to perform at school/ failed exams: 12%
      Family commitments (eg: child minding): 7%
      Working at home or in a business: 6%
      Illness: 5%
      Pregnancy: 5%
      Disability: 4%
      Not accepted for enrolment: 2%
      Difficult to get to school (transport): 1%

   Most South African children live in the most appaling conditions of poverty, disfunctional families where the main priority is to bring some bread to the table.
   It is not uncomon for these poor kids to be beaten and otherwise sexualy and mentaly abused.
   Before one can think of even sending these kids to school, the root cause of living in the most appaling poverty and in disfunctional homes must be addressed.
   I suggest that very large boarding schools be created that are run by professional educators – large for econnomy of scale as good educators are few and far between and a good educator needs to be spread thin – and that kids be placed there for full board and lodging.
   Boarding schools are not ideal, they have their setback, but in the present situation, they present in my opinion a valid solution.
   All the logistics of such a setup can be worked up by professional social workers particularily to ensure that the relationship between the kids and their parents is maintain.
   There is no shortage of money in this country do do this, and the private sector, particularily corporates can come to the table.
   The vicious circle has to be broken and it is essential to think out of the box!
