   There is a flaw in this “researched observation” – does it mean South Africans with pcp income of >R5/ day don’t admire “…people who have expensive homes, cars, and clothes.”?

      …but the question still remain unanswered. Do this PCI with >R5/day have envy or admiration? Surely, the answer is a definite “yes”. Envy or admiration for materialism is not limited by income level. Otherwise, we would have “crass materialism”.

         Dear David,

         I am not sure that you have noted, as I have noted, that, I have never heard a person in the low PCI grouping make a statement like,- ” I wouldn’t be seen dead at Pep Stores.” I’m pretty sure you get my drift! Besides, in my experience, poor folk are far more likely to share the little they have with others than what they are likely to be be morbidly envious.

   David – adults with a higher daily PCI have a lower proportion for this statistic.

   For example, for adults with a daily PCI of greater than R280, this proportion is only 52%.

   What I find as being something quite wonderful to consider is the fact that, those who are in the low PCI class or category admit to simply admiring rather than envying those who have the fancy homes, cars and other luxuries. This is not something that comes very easily to the so-called upper-crust of society: they who look at other privileged people with unbridled envy and scorn, rather than with admiration; this particularly when the other personality appears to be even slightly more worthy of being admired or complimented than what they are. Material privileges and prosperity are seldom known to improve the human traits of those considered to be a cut above the rest, often leading to the demise of previously entrenched, more important, eternal spiritual values. In latter-day terms, it sure seems that, it would be easier for a low PCI man to pass through the eye of a needle than for a high PCI man to enter the Kingdom of God! Just a little well-intended, free food for thought!
