Waiting for a miracle

Wits researchers highlighted that at any given period there are up to 4 300 people waiting for organ donations in South Africa. Since the start of the pandemic, dwindling donor enrollment has increased the wait time for vital organs. Given the complications and lack of donor availability the average wait time for a kidney transplant is now 12-15 years, up from 8-10 years.     A sobering fact. It. would be interesting to know how many deaths occur, that could’ve helped improve these statistics? What percentage of the population are registered donors? How many missed opportunities occur daily / weekly / annually?

      Hello
      It would definitely be interesting to know all of that. Unfortunately we don’t have all that information on hand, but according to the Western Cape Government in 2019 only 0.2% of our population are registered organ donors.
