According to SA’s Basic Education Minister, South Africa has the highest rate of absenteeism in the SADC (Southern African Development Community). There were 392,000 teachers employed at public schools around the country in 2012 with each teacher, on average, being absent for 19 days (totalling close to 7.5 million days absent).     What this statistic does not reveal is that 19 days is effectively 10% of the school year: schools are required to teach for only some 194 days in the year.
