   If you are an average unskilled worker in South Africa you might earn 10 BPS a day , maybe the average worker doesnt mind missing the odd day or two a month,going for interviews or just taking a break, after all there is not much work ethic envolved inthis place. In the UK tha average wage is probably three or four times what it is here and yes you have a much higher work ethic.

   Oh yes – many strikers here dont have jobs but they join the mob because if there is any looting that could take place in a march there is plenty of broken window shopping to be done. So striking can be more lucrative than working. Point to ponder?

   This was of course after Thatcher closed most of the mines etc…. but maybe that’s due here soon too!

   How is this calculated? There are only 365 days in a year and SA has lost 440 days to strike action?

      Thanks for your comment. The reason the total strike days can be expressed as 440 days per year is because it is calculated per 1000 workers. This is equivalent to saying that for every worker in the country, 0.44 days per year were lost due to strikes over the 2008-12 period. Considering that this ‘per worker’ figure is quite small (even for South Africa), expressing it per 1000 workers simplifies cross-country comparisons.

   Why was the UK chosen as a comparison? Why not Greece for example? I’d rate this “fact” boring
