Queen Elizabeth II was the last surviving head of state who had served during the Second World War, and also the first female member of the royal family to serve in the British Armed Forces. When she was 18 she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women’s branch of the British Army, where she trained as a mechanic – earning her the nickname “Princess Auto Mechanic”.
