   I agree that the prices are great but you can’t get the 64 gb iPad 2…. I have been waiting since launch and still well down the waiting list on several distributors…….probably now worth waiting for iPad 3… Anyone know it’s release date?

   it may be cheaper as a direct conversion but this doesnt take into account getting it shipped here. Also, by backdooring apple SA / IBM your ipad is now officially a grey import. Your warranty is now void and you’ll struggle to get any support form your local service agents… and no i dont work for them. lol 🙂

   It’s like anything else in SA – we all moan about the price of cars, petrol, IT items etc. Pick a product category and when we compare to other countries we’re getting ripped off BUT we continue to buy. It’s all about supply and demand – if no one bought the iPad locally, Apple SA would drop their prices very quickly! Also, why shouldn’t a local distributor service a grey import? I bought a swatch for my kid at duty free in Zurich Airport – it stopped working after 3 months and Swatch SA honoured the internatioanl warranty without a question asked – now that’s the service EVERY decent brand including Apple – should offer!

   A little off-topic but from an earlier query to Apple in connection with an iPod, I seem to recall the Apple guarantee is world-wide – perhaps iPads are handled differently

   Unless you take the cost of what Amazon actually charges for shipping such an item here, your comparison is meaningless. Amazon no longer ships surface mail to South Africa. That doubles the cost of ordering a book, what would the shipping cost be of something as valuable as this be? Another thing – licensing restrictions on certain hardware and software items might mean that Amazon is not permitted to sell to South African clients.

   Guys – ignore the shipping costs and do what I do. Wait for a friend that lives or travels overseas and ask them to bring it back in their luggage. Problem solved.

   Shipping costs are completely irrelevant to the discussion. The point of this (and previous days’ facts) is that consumers in other countries pay less for household goods than South African consumers do (and not by a trivial amount).

   And if you take into account what people earn in other countries compared to SA, the comparison is even more stark.

    hmmm It’s not only the shipping cost but the import duties which the SA authorities are entitled to charge on luxury imported goods. The rest of the world imposes harsh tariffs on us for things like agricultural products and wine so we are entitled to make some money back. Add the two together and the cost is not so different, so it was a silly comparison to make. Also, you are putting your friends at risk if you ask them to illegally import electronic goods for you – my daughter’s friend brought in a tablet for me and the authorities stoped him, searched him, and made him pay duty on his own computer AND my tablet.

    A same spec iPad costs R$2199 reais in Brazil or about R9,400. The good news if you live in Brazil is that Foxconn may start manufacturing iPad’s locally which might lower the price.

    I am south african and live overseas, my friends ask me all the time to bring them Ipads , and since there is always a friend coming to my side of the world, i always ask them to take the item back to a friend.

    If the ipad is legitimate the apple store has to fix. I have had my ipad for 8 months and never needed service. Apple store is not the only place where you get a solution . They outsource their fixing to apple engineers all over the country. If there is a problem i just go to a certified engineer. If apple SA refuse to sort it out – i just get the item sent back to me same way i sent to a friend in SA.

    don’t orders from amazon face an import duty of 14% .

    Grey good are fake items – not licensed by a manufacturer. the world is flat – if you can get it overseas and it is from a trusted licensed apple supplier then there is nothing unethical or gray. you are not running competitive trade. besides apple store in SA is out of stock.

    Ipad 3 was rumored to come in june in taiwan – but i thin post the Japan in tsunami there is a global shortage of chip – just buy ipad 2
