There are just over 1.8 million people aged 70 and above in South Africa, or approximately 3.4% of the total population. 9.4% of the white population is aged 70 and above versus just 2.8% for the black population. (LFS 2014 Q3)

    Whilst this claim is true, the QLFS in benchmarked against a constant model of the mid year population estimates. Currently, it is benchmarked to the 2013 population estimates and is projected forward to the mid point of the survey concerned. Once a new major survey is released, the model to which it is benchmarked against will change. However, if instead of using the 2013 model we use the most recent 2014 model then the proportion of 70+ is 3.3% (as opposed to 3.4%), for blacks it is 2.8% which given its large size remains constant but for the smaller whites group it is 9.0% (as opposed to 9.4%)
