Muttnik: A Martyr for the Cosmos
Laika, a stray dog from Moscow, became the first animal to orbit Earth aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957. Her flight proved living beings could survive launch and microgravity, paving the path for human spaceflight. Sadly, she only survived a few hours after liftoff, dying from overheating and acute stress, becoming a martyr for space travel.
