Frisky Frogs
The wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) survives freezing winters by allowing up to 65-70% of its body water to freeze. It produces glucose and urea as natural antifreeze agents to protect its cells from damage. During this time, the frog’s heart stops, it ceases breathing, and it enters a state of suspended animation. In spring, it thaws and resumes normal activity.
