"Since its formalization in 1992, South Africa’s micro lending industry has grown dramatically. According to the latest industry statistics there are over 1 900 registered lenders with a collective loan book of almost R18.5 billion. On the face of it, the industry could be regarded as a rare international example of sustainable (i.e. profitable) micro finance delivery and a role model for other financial providers in South Africa who seek to increase the accessibility of their products and services to the low-income market."
