   According to the same survey, this viewpoint does not differ significantly across a proxy for literacy – highest education level:

   9% of adults with a higher than matric education (technikon, university or other post matric) disagree with this statement (‘Everyone should be able to read and write’).

   For those with less than a primary school education completed, the proportion is 10%.

   These are literate people else they wouldn’t be reading the question and/or the medium it appeared in. And that folks, is very scary.

   There’s other questions to ask as to why someone would say this, such as:
   1. The quality of the data: Are respondents actually thinking about the question or just ticking a box to get the survey over with…?
   2. Answering the question in a very literal manner: ask yourself, does EVERYONE need to be able to read and write? Is it a must that a blind person be able to read and write, or what about your eighty year old grandmother who doesn’t yet know, is her life really going to change now if she learns how to read and write, is it necessary… nice to have, but necessary? Maybe not…

   Just some thoughts, use it, don’t use it
