   Are you saying that only 16% of South Africans access the internet each week? This seems incredibly low….and shows a gap for growth

   I too found that this was a surprisingly low statistic, especially with the growth in mobile phones that have internet access over the same period. Especially when one considers this is access over an entire week. It would be interesting to know how this Fact was derived.

   The question in the AMPS survey was the following: “Have you personally accessed the Internet/World Wide Web in the past 7 days?”

   Other time periods prior to the survey asked about were “the past 12 months”, “the past 4 weeks”, and “yesterday”.

      Thanks, that could explain the seemingly low figure it shows how misleading stats can be taken out of context. I would imagine that a lot more people would have responded to the “yesterday” option and that that is where the highest number sits? This was very misleading.

         I think you misunderstand what I meant. The respondents did not have to choose only ONE of those options for personally accessing the Internet.

         The questions on “past 12 months”, “past 4 weeks”, etc were all asked separately. In other words, those people that said yes to “yesterday” would have also said yes to “past 7 days” and so on.

            Ok thanks for clarifying. I must say I had initially been quite surprised by this stat., but have looked for additional info and Arthur Goldstuck in a 2010 presentation projected 7.2m internet users in SA for 2011. Stats SA estimate our population to be 50.5m mid 2011. So that gives 14% of the population using the internet. So very much of the same order.

   I always get the impression that people who regularly use the internet assume higher usage than what the stats show. We all know that the majority of people in SA fall into lower LSMs and won’t necessarily have smartphones or jobs which grant them access to the internet, so why are we surprised that the majority of people don’t access the internet? Wonder if anyone has done any research on perceptions of access among users vs. non-users?
