Of all students who were enrolled in public higher education institutions in 2009, 78.6% were Black (Black African, Coloured and Indian/Asian), while 57.1% were female. (Department of Basic Education, bit.ly/TndbFG)

    How closely does this match the profile of the general population. On their own they say nothing.

      Jennifer – that is a good question. Let us compare these figures to the Statistics South Africa mid-year population estimates of 2009.

      The Black population (Black African, Coloured and Indian/Asian) was 91% of the entire South African population [88% when looking at 20+ adults only].

      The Female population was 52% of the entire South African population [53% when looking at 20+ adults only].

    Does your term “public higher education instutitions” refer to General Education & Training institutions, “high schools”, or tertiary institutions like universities?
