   This could be interpreted that our roads are very safe!
   We know they’re not, but lots can be said about this stat.

   This is pretty amazing, particularly since SA has one of the highest raod death rates in the world. If you add the two together then we must be way ahead of the pack. Scary.

   South Africa will alway’s invest in road name changes yet not on salary’s to increase our police force or any other public service desperately in need; hospitals; teachers or unemployment?

   I question this statement, as I do with most of these that state that South Africa is the murder capital, the rape, the suicide or any other capital of the world. As far as official statistics are concerned, SA does not even make the Top 10 of countries with high murder rates per 100k people (I did not bother to see our 2011 position).

   All I can deduce from this fact is that our drivers are the safest in the world

   It is interesting that South Africa is the worst in everything and in a lot of instances these “worst in everything” statistics contradict themselves i.e worst in road death fatalities in the world and worst cases of murder in the world. This contradicts the fact-of-the day you’ve just published. My view is that if you want to communicate with South Africans and market your products and what you can do for your customer, you must use credible source and be accurate and factual in your messages.

   The UN’s data contradicts the article listed as a source. See: http://data.un.org/Data.aspx?d=UNODC&f=tableCode%3A1

   Downloaded into excel and we are around number 6 to 8 in terms of worst homicide in the world. I suspect intentional homicide is s very complex stat. Countries like Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran and other countries with conflict will likely have under reported murder rates for many reasons. If the police shot and killed your brother will you go and tell them? Hell no. Realistically we are much further down the list of murders…. That is the problem with stats sanitized figures that will support some bias…

   I don’t believe that……
   As they say you get lies, dam lies then Statistics..
   Why do people dwell on the negatives, were are all the positive states
   About our beautiful country????
   We need to become more like the USA and point out the negatives of other countries then everyone will not see our few problems and think we have the safes and best country.
   In my view the worst place is the USA, all you have to do is see the programs on DSTV about the the USA, all about crime, murder, rape and gangs….

   I could put this the other way:
   South Africa is the only country in the world whose road accident fatality rate is lower than its murder rate.
