There are 1.8 million people employed by government (local, provincial and national). A further 223,000 work for a government controlled enterprise (e.g. Eskom, Telkom). (LFS 2010 Q1)

    Gary – public sector employment in South Africa accounts for 16% of the working population (according to LFS 2010 Q1).
