    551 tonnes of sugar equals to 551,000 kgs equals to 551 million grams of sugar. With almost 55 million inhabitants, that means 10 grams of sugar per person. Puts it in perspective…. But it is still too much.

    Goran – My apologies, the wording of the fact was quite misleading. ‘South Africans’ should read: ‘South African adults’. The AMPS survey only deals with adults over the age of 16 years. There are 31.5 million 16+ adults in South Africa giving us 17g of sugar per adult.
