Households in the lowest income decile spend 32.8% of household consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages. In the highest income decile the corresponding percentage is 7.3%. (Income and Expenditure Survey 2005/6, Stats SA)

    Why is this? Can anyone explain this please? Doesn’t people in the high income brackets eat? This could surely mean that I would possibly be in the low income deciles as next to rent/bond payments, food & beverage is my highest expenditure.

    It depends on how it is calculated. 32.8% of a low income of say R10000(R3280) is much less than 7.3% of a high income of R70000 (R5110)

    R10000 is a “low” household income? Only about 20% of South African households earn more than this. Wake up R!
