There were 318,287 valid recorded deaths in 1997 and 499,268 in 2002, an increase of 57%. The increase was almost entirely due to diseases commonly associated with HIV. Unnatural deaths (e.g. murder, suicide) actually dropped. (Statistics South Africa P03093)
