AIDS is the most commonly cited concern for South Africans – 85% of adult South Africans say they are concerned about AIDS. Other top concerns are crime (79%) followed by unemployment (78%) (FutureFact PeopleScape 2004). According to Stats SAs mid-year population estimates 9.8% of the population is HIV positive. Surveys typically understate HIV-prevalence significantly – according to the 2004 General Household Survey only 1% of the population say they are HIV-positive. (GHS 2004)
